Barn Day Program is a success, for both volunteers and horses!
The new Barn Day Program in the Triangle has been a huge success, for both the volunteers giving their time - and the horses receiving their loving care.
Two foster farms in the Triangle that quarantine and rehabilitate new horses coming into USERL have opened their farms up to volunteers wanting to interact with the horses they are helping (see "Come Join us at the Barns!" on our homepage, right side column for more info).
Starting this past fall, this program has taken off and continuing to grow steadily.  Each farm is designated one Saturday per month for volunteers to come and clean the stalls, buckets, etc. and then care for the horses.  They are washed/brushed, medically treated, held for the farrier and exercised if needed.  The volunteers are loving it, and the horses are, too!  And this gives a much needed break to the foster farm owners.  These two farms house up to 6 USERL horses each.  This past Saturday (February 23, 2008), ten volunteers were busy caring for the horses (photos below).
King's Ransom gets a bath and all-over thorough cleaning from the volunteers to ready him for a potential adopter coming to see him later in the day.
One of our young, but experienced, volunteers lightly exercises King's Ransom while he waits to dry from his bath.
Two volunteers from Johnston County Animal Control, Roger and Lisa, give "Earl" a thorough cleaning from head to toe.
A volunteers holds "Ruby" for the farrier.  "Ruby" is a newcomer, having been donated to USERL by an owner that could not afford her expensive and time-consuming recovery from deep lacerations on both hind legs.
"Little Joe", our miracle colt, gets antsy waiting for his turn with the farrier.  Roger, who handled the case from where Little Joe came from, takes him for a walk to let off some of his steam.
"Little Joe" gets his hooves trimmed for the first time.  Thanks, Frank Marques!
A huge Thank You to these volunteers for the giving of their time so unselfishly, with nothing in return except dirty brows and horse kisses!
