Aged mare sheltered by USERL
January 28, 2008:
USERL accepted a surrender of an aged TWH mare earlier today. This case had been previously reported early last year; the owner was educated on aged equine care (other horses were in good condition), and the owner had complied with care needed (appropriate diet and vet visit - dental care); hence, the mare had begun to gain weight on follow-up visits. Alerted again this year, USERL and Johnston County Animal Control visited the property and found the mare, once again, in poor shape.
The owner agreed to surrender the mare to be evaluated by USERL, rehabilitated and adopted into a new home. She has been safely transported to a quarantine facility where she enjoyed some soaked hay stretcher pellets. We will update you on her progress.

April 18, 2008:
Bella has had some issues that we're attempting to overcome. She choked last month, so she is still on soaked feed. But she eats it very well. She is scheduled to get dental work done now that her weight is better. Bella also has arthritis, but is easily maintained on Bute when needed. She is a very sweet mare and will need a foster home following her dental work.
Below, volunteers give Bella a bath during Barn Days on April 12th. It's wonderful to see how she's filling out!

Bella is blooming! This sweet mare has come a long way. Her rehab is almost complete and she will be looking for a foster or new adoptive home soon. Bella is kind-natured and sweet, and can only be turned out with a gentle companion as she's quite submissive. If you are interested in giving Bella a quiet retirement home, please fill out an application (foster or adoption buttons on front page).

Bella is just blossoming! She continues to gain weight, has a shiny black coat and is energetic and lively. Her arthritis doesn't bother her day to day activities. She will now get her teeth floated - the last part of her rehab. Her poor weight and choking episode earlier this year delayed her teeth work. Even after the dental work she will likely need to remain on a "mush" diet. However, her easy weight gain these past few months indicate she will need to be cut back soon on her feeding program. So she will not be difficult to maintain, other than needing her feed soaked.

Bella was a huge hit and wonderful with the visitors (of all types!).
Bella is now available for adoption as a companion horse.
