September 11, 2008:
An Edgecombe County Cruelty Investigator called USERL to assist with a case.  The owner had several horses, with two in good condition, one a body condition score of 4 and a mare at a body condition score of 1.5.  Unable to provide care for the mare, the owner surrendered her to the county and will be monitored on the health of her remaining horses.
The surrendered mare was transported to a USERL quarantine barn to begin her rehabilitation.  She is in her early twenties and has teeth issues that need to be resolved with floating when her weight has improved.  Her hooves are very overgrown on the front and she is lame in her front right.  She also shows lameness in her left hind limb.  She is, fortunately, bright and alert and responding well.

Thank you to Edgecombe County Sheriff's Department and Humane Society Investigator for their diligent work on the case!
Edgecombe County Mare
September 19, 2008:
The mare, now named Jessica, is doing very good.  She's eating great and enjoying the company of other fosters.  Jessica is a very sweet "people" horse and follows people around for attention.

October 6, 2008:
Jessica continues to improve and gain weight.  She is active and, at this time, has no more lameness in the front right hoof/leg and the hind leg lameness appears to be a mild string halt issue.

January 16, 2009:
Jessica is doing very well and gaining weight at an average rate.  She still has some to go but she looks obviously much better already.  Thank you to her foster for providing her with such great care!

September/2010:
Jessica is an absolute doll!  She is available for adoption and is perfect for a beginner to intermediate rider.  Jessica can only be ridden in a bitless bridle due to her missing four inches of her tongue, but rides very well.  She needs senior feed and good quality hay, but is not difficult to keep weight on.
