Cruelty Case in Greene County
December 10, 2009:
USERL was asked to assist with an investigation involving 5 horses in Greene County.  After unsuccessful attempts to educate the owner, all 5 horses were seized by the county.  Two were transported to USERL quarantine/rehab farms in the Triangle Region for immediate medical care.
The above colt, a yearling, was severely malnourished and had multiple abscesses on his head.  The second colt, 4-5 months old, was also severely underweight.
February 20, 2010:
Both colts are doing great, improving quickly and already back up to weight.  The abscesses on the yearling's head cleared up with a simple round of antibiotics.  The weanling came down with a respiratory virus during the 2nd week of quarantine.  Both were suspect for "strangles", however the PCR test came back negative.  Both colts have been in quarantine for an extended time to keep the spread of this illness contained and have gained all their weight back very easily with a basic feeding program despite battling this illness.
The yearling, at left, and the weanling, above, have both rehabilitated very easily on a basic feeding program (fed twice daily).
