3 Horses Sheltered by USERL from Harnett County
May 10, 2008:
Three surrendered horses were received into the USERL program from a Harnett County case.  USERL volunteers transported them to quarantine facilities in the Triangle Region on Saturday.  They range in body condition score of 1.5 to 2.  All three will be evaluated by a vet and put on a weight gain feeding program, and likely need teeth floating, etc.  Sponsorship of these three will be available shortly at USERL's store website (www.userlstore.org).  Help USERL give these three a new chance at life by sponsoring one of them!

May 17, 2008:
Dixie has a few teeth missing, but actually eats senior feed quite well and is starting to gain weight already.
The photos below are from "Barn Day" at one of the quarantine/rehab farms.  She had her hooves trimmed, got a good bath, and her puncture wounds were cleaned thoroughly.  She remains on antibiotics to fight infection.
Two vounteers, Marlon (left) and Nikki (right), give Dixie a good bath on "Barn Day".
Sweet Dixie dries in the sun after her bath.
May 17, 2008:
The puncture wounds are beginning to heal and the swelling is reduced now.
May 19, 2008:
The grey gelding has been named "Champ", and is doing well in quarantine.  He has some possible lameness issues, but could not be evaluated upon arrival due to depleted energy reserves (lameness exams involve trotting straight lines and circles).  He is now moving with a more purposeful step, so he will be evaluated for lameness within the next few months.  He is gaining weight already and quite easily, as seen in the photos below.
Champ is a very sweet boy.  He did well for his first bath, and is scheduled for farrier work to repair his severely cracked hooves this Saturday.
The Appaloosa mare has been named "Sweet Dixie".  She is 28 yrs. old.  She sustained some injuries the day before she came into USERL.  Her right hind leg has three puncture wounds on the back of the fetlock and pastern, and one of the front just above the fetlock.  It was swollen (below middle) and already infected.  She was started on antibiotics immediately to fight the infection.  The wounds were cleaned and clipped and treated topically (below right).  She also has a gash above her right eye that is being treated.

The gray, now named "Champ", is very thin.  He's submissive in a herd and has many scars on his body to show for it.  There is a tumor behind his left jawbone and upon evaluation and aspiration of it - it is a melanoma.  Another tumor is located in his left flank area - but is possibly benign - and will be evaluated further to determine if it can be removed.  He doesn't show signs of any issues from the melanoma, so his rehabilitation will continue as is.
Champ loves Oat Hay!

The Saddlebred mare has been named "Bessie", and has been tentavely aged at 12 yrs. old.  She is doing very well in quarantine.  Updated photos will be coming soon.

June 21, 2008: Sweet Dixie is blooming with new health.  Her bloodwork is now normal (irregularities were found when she arrived in Quarantine), and she's actually an easy keeper for an old gal.
July 2008: Bessie is doing very well and filling in nicely.  She is difficult about lifting her hooves, so her foster is working with her on this so that a proper trim can be done.
Update:
All three of these horses are doing great and rehabilitating easily.  Below are updated photos of Bessie and Sweet Dixie.  Photos of Champ will be coming soon!
January/2009:
Champ is doing great and easily gained his weight back.  He's not shown any further lameness.  He is currently awaiting evaluation of his training and then will be available for adoption soon.
November 22, 2009:
Bessie had an average rehab time period due to her poor teeth.  We had them floated once her weight was better and she finished rehab nicely.  She has an issue with getting her hooves worked on, so has been getting some training for it and is doing much better.  Bessie was evaluated for riding and was slow and easy.  She will be available for adoption soon.

Sweet Dixie in September 2009.  She's doing great and is currently up for adoption.  Easy senior horse and she gets along very well with other horses.
