NC Triangle Region
May 1st:
A 3 yr. old gelding was surrendered during an investigation in Cumberland County May 1st. He was down and unable to get up. Cumberland County Animal Control called a veterinarian to treat him immediately and was administered emergency care and IV Fluids. He was then pulled onto a trailer and transported to a Triangle USERL quarantine facility where he was assisted into a standing position. He is severely emaciated with a body score of 1.
Now named "Rocky", the feisty gelding is eating well and getting stronger.
Cumberland County Case - "Rocky"
May 7th:
Rocky is continuing to improve. He's been bathed thoroughly to remove caked on manure and mud and his sores are being treated daily. He has required assistance to stand after lying down thus far, but is close to having enough strength to do it on his own.
June 11, 2009:
Rocky is doing great and gaining weight easily. He's very easy going and loves people! Rocky is now ready to move onto a foster home to finish his weight rehabilitation. If interested in donating your space and time, go to the main userl website at www.userl.org/userl-foster.html for more information on fostering, and a link to an online application.
October 23, 2009:
Rocky is almost complete with rehabilitation and looking great! He is, however, battling a tooth root abscess. He will be re-radiographed soon to determine which tooth needs to be removed (the first radiograph was inconclusive as to exactly which tooth was the issue). He apparently doesn't experience any discomfort as his appetite has been fine throughout. In fact, he's on hay/pasture only and needs to go on a diet (or find a job and work it off)!
January/2011:
Rocky's tooth issue has been an issue to resolve. Due to his young age (tooth is very long), and due to only minor inflammation at the root for the past 8 months, the collaborative veterinarian recommendation is to wait until it becomes an issue before considering removal. Horse's teeth are difficult to remove, young ones in particular. The high risk of secondary infection post surgery outweighs removing it now. The vets cleared him for training due to no pain involved with the tooth.
Rocky was fortunate to go to a foster home this past fall and start training under saddle. He's doing great! And although still very green, is promising to be a wonderful trail horse.
Rocky is now available for adoption. He has had a follow-up dental evaluation and his tooth is no longer an issue. Some scar tissue was debrided over his face and stitched up. With the tooth issue resolved, no surgery will be needed for Rocky!
