Press Release: November 30, 2008:
USERL Investigators were asked to assist with a case in Surry County, NC involving a large group of horses in need of immediate removal from life threatening conditions. The owner had failed to comply with Animal Control's recommendations of basic care, and carcasses of horses who had lost their battle for life littered the property.
On November 26th, with only 24 hr. notice, eight USERL Investigators and volunteers from the USERL Triad and Triangle Regions, and three Surry County Animal Control Officers removed the surviving 12 horses, ponies and foals under a seizure warrant and transported them to three USERL quarantine farms. They have all been evaluated by USERL Investigators and veterinarians and range in body condition score of 1 to 4 with most in the 1 to 3 range. All are heavily parasitized with bloated abdomens (internal parasites) as well as external parasites (lice). Most are mares will be checked for pregnancy when they are stronger.
USERL wishes to acknowledge and thank Surry County Officials and State Veterinarian Officials for their diligence in this case! And to our USERL Investigators and volunteers for their holiday time to assist these horses!

Large groups of debilitated horses such as this cost thousands to rehabilitate with much needed nutrition and medical care. USERL asks those that can to donate to help with their costly care.

Update! February 17, 2009:
The horses won in court today with a conviction of 12 counts of animal cruelty for the owner of the horses, Cynthia Sudol. The horses were awarded to USERL and the owner can no longer own horses and must pay court costs.
USERL would like to thank Surry County officials and Animal Control for their hard work on this case!
