April 5, 2011:
USERL was asked by Guilford County to assist with an abandoned horse on April 4th. He was in very poor body condition and reported having many injuries/wounds over his body and legs. After sending out a USERL investigator and veterinarian to assess him, it was decided to bring him to NCSU - Large Animal Hospital for diagnostics the following morning. He was given pain management for the evening, and USERL volunteers transported him to Raleigh Tuesday morning, naming him "Steve Tyler" on their way (Tyler for short).
The NCSU vets and techs worked tirelessly cleaning Tyler's mud covered body to find all his wounds and tend to them. To be sensitive to our supporters and readers, we will not be posting photos of his injuries which were numerous, necrotic and filled with maggots. It is also out of respect for a young horse that suffered tremendous pain for some time before finding help.
Severely infected injuries to two of his legs brought the most concern, although multiple other wounds and a corneal abrasion on his eye added to his discomfort. After methodically assessing both legs, it was decided by USERL to humanely euthanize Tyler to end his suffering. Surgery and recovery were a possibility, but his prognosis was guarded and the expense tremendous. Without a better known outcome, and not wishing Tyler to suffer any more - USERL felt this was best for him.
Tyler was euthanized early this evening. He was only two years old.

USERL wishes to thank Dr. Dzuiban for her assistance Tuesday evening in assessing him and providing care and pain management until the following morning. USERL also wishes to thank the NCSU - College of Veterinary Medicine for their tireless, compassionate efforts for Tyler today.
Donations are appreciated for the veterinary care he received today, and his humane euthanasia. A Tyler Memorial Fund has also been set up to for donations, which can be made in his honor to assist other neglected horses in need of emergency care.
