January 16, 2008:
County officials seized 4 horses in Wilson County and charged the owner with 5 counts of animal cruelty (a cow was the 5th animal seized).
Two of the four horses are in thin shape; an aged mare and a 10-12 yr. old mare with a nursing 8 month colt by her side. The third horse, a stallion, is in moderate condition and the fourth (colt) is in good condition (nutrition was provided by the dam).
USERL was asked to assist in the seizure and shelter the horses pending court litigation. They were transported to USERL quarantine facilities where they will be evaluated and put on a rehabilitation program.
4 Horses seized in Wilson County
Wilson County officials have been investigating this case for many months, finding the horses without any water and inadequate food on numerous occassions. Updates will be posted as the case progresses through court.
Many thanks to Wilson County officials and USERL investigators involved in the case.

Chris Overstreet, the owner of four horses seized January 16, 2008, was found guilty on 4 charges of misdemeanor animal cruelty today. The county won custody of the horses in a civil hearing 2 weeks earlier.
USERL-Triangle Region wishes to thank the Wilson County Sheriff's Department for a fantastic job with this case!
The Haflinger stallion and the colt have been castrated and are doing very well. All four are being evaluated for training and will then be available for adoption. Below are photos of the horses after rehab (order is same as above photos).
